Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) didn’t hold back on Tuesday, tearing into Vice President Kamala Harris by comparing her pledge to secure the U.S. southern border to O.J. Simpson vowing to find the “real” killer. Yep, that O.J. Simpson.
During a rally in Arizona last week, Harris, with a straight face, promised that if she were elected president, she’d fight for “strong border security” and “comprehensive reform” of the immigration system. This is the same Harris who, at the start of President Joe Biden’s first term, was tasked with tackling the “root causes” of illegal immigration—a job she’s been so effective at that border encounters have exploded to a casual 10 million under the Biden-Harris administration.
In June 2021, after months of avoiding the southern border like it was a bad Yelp-reviewed restaurant, Harris famously deflected questions about her absence by saying, “And I haven’t been to Europe,” as if that had anything to do with the price of tea in China.
Cotton responded to Harris’ latest campaign vow with a cutting remark:
“Kamala Harris promising to secure the border is like O.J. Simpson promising to find the real killer.”
Ouch.
Harris has been a favorite target of Republicans, especially former President Donald Trump, for her abysmal record on the border. And who could blame them? The numbers speak for themselves.
Despite the border being a political minefield for Democrats, Harris has decided to wade into it anyway, probably hoping that voters will forget her earlier stance. A recent voice-over ad even claims that “as vice president, she backed the toughest border control bill in decades.” Sure, Kamala. And the tooth fairy is real, too.
Harris’ newfound tough talk on immigration is a far cry from her 2020 campaign, where she openly argued that crossing the border illegally shouldn’t be a crime. Now, her campaign conveniently insists that her position is “the same as the administration’s—unauthorized border crossings are illegal,” according to POLITICO. How convenient.
To top it off, Harris’ exact plans to “secure the border” are as elusive as a unicorn. She hasn’t sat down for a major interview or held a press conference since becoming the Democrats’ nominee, and her campaign website is as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard when it comes to a policy platform.
Sen. Cotton summed it up nicely :”Kamala Harris is hiding from the press because every time she speaks, she reminds the American people she is a radical San Francisco liberal.” He added, “We don’t need to speculate what Kamala would do as President—just look at the Biden-Harris record: Inflation, an open border, and chaos around the world.” Mic drop.
